Frequently Asked Questions
Who are you guys?
Rock and Roll 50th Anniversary (sm) is an organization dedicated
to organizing and executing the official celebration of this event.
What qualifies you as the "official" gatekeepers?
We feel that in order to properly celebrate the 50th Anniversary,
it is important for someone to step up and assume responsibility
for identifying and planning the surrounding activities to ensure
a singular focus. We believe that the celebration should pay proper
respect to the form, its pioneers and its traditions and reflect
the impact this musical genre has had on our culture.
What exactly do you do?
We have exhaustively researched the early days of Rock and Roll
and have announced an official yearlong celebration based on that
research. We are developing a schedule of events and actively engaging
key partners in that process. There will be both celebratory and
philanthropic components. We are offering exclusive sponsorships
for these events.
As part of those sponsorships, we work on a consultative basis with
our selected partners to ensure that the co-branded value of the
sponsorship is maximized and the sponsorships are effectively activated.
We are also planning an awards celebration to honor the significant
contributors to Rock and Roll. We will be identifying, marketing
and licensing memorabilia associated with the anniversary.
We will continue to enhance this site with relevant content. We
will serve as the central point of contact to coordinate participation
in the celebration.
When exactly is the 50th Anniversary of Rock and Roll?
We have selected July 5 2004 - July 5 2005 as the official dates
for the celebration. For details on why these dates were chosen
see "When".
Weren't there Rock and Roll songs before July 5, 1954? I thought
there were songs all the way back to the 20's and 30's that were
rock and roll?
We are not celebrating the anniversary of the first rock and
roll record for several reasons.
1) There is no common agreement on what that record was.
2) It is not clear that any one single record can definitively be
labeled as the first rock and roll record.
We therefore have identified what we believe to be the anniversary
of the emergence of rock and roll as a cultural form. There is significant
evidence that this occurred in the 1954-1955 time frame.
What events are planned?
We are currently developing a set of events. We are planning
musical events, a Rock and Roll 50th Anniversary (sm) awards ceremony,
the release of a collection of songs from the first 50 years of
rock and roll, as well as other activities surrounding the celebration.
Your mission statement indicates a philanthropic component? Who
are you supporting?
We are researching a large number of worthy philanthropic recipients.
Our selection will likely be made in conjunction with our partners
and may leverage their current charitable affiliations. The choice
of recipients will reflect the priorities of our mission statement.
We are committee to integrating this component into the celebration.
Are you a non-profit organization?
No, we are not organized as a non-profit. We believe the most
effective vehicle to balance the purity and dignity this event demands,
and the reality of economic sustainability, is to function as a
"for profit" company and integrate the philanthropic and
celebratory components in an appropriate way.
